Detachment of the retina

Detachment of the retina refers to the lifting off of the light-sensitive layer of the retina (photoreceptor layer) from the underlying choroid. The upper layer of the retina slowly lifts off the underlying supply layer, which impairs the photoreceptors. Symptoms of the disorder include flashes of light and black floaters in front of the eye. As the disease progresses, vision is increasingly restricted, as though a black veil is covering the eye.
